The Naval Boat Building Yard employs advanced Vacuum Infusion Technology for the fabrication of high-performance fibre-reinforced composite crafts. This state-of-the-art closed-mould manufacturing process uses controlled vacuum pressure to uniformly infuse resin through dry glass fibre reinforcements within a sealed environment. The result is a lightweight, high-strength composite structure with an optimized fibre-to-resin ratio, superior structural integrity, enhanced durability, and consistent manufacturing quality. This advanced fabrication method enables the production of reliable, high-performance vessels designed to meet demanding maritime operational requirements.
The Naval Boat Building Yard's Carpentry Facility combines traditional naval craftsmanship with modern precision woodworking technology to support the construction of high-quality marine vessels. Equipped with advanced machinery, the facility manufactures precision timber plugs and moulds for composite hull fabrication, structural wooden frameworks, and marine-grade interior fittings. Using high-quality, moisture-resistant marine timber, the workshop delivers durable and dimensionally accurate components that meet stringent naval and maritime standards. This capability plays a vital role in ensuring the quality, efficiency, and reliability of vessel construction while supporting the production of high-performance fibre-reinforced composite crafts.
The Naval Boat Building Yard's Welding Facility provides precision metal fabrication services to support the construction of fibre-reinforced composite crafts. Equipped with advanced TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), MIG (Metal Inert Gas), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) capabilities, the facility manufactures and assembles a wide range of structural and functional metal components, including engine foundations, mounting brackets, deck fittings, support frames, handrails, ladders, fuel tank supports, towing and lifting points, mast assemblies, and other custom-fabricated marine hardware. Each component is produced in accordance with stringent naval quality standards to ensure high structural integrity, corrosion resistance, dimensional accuracy, and long-term reliability in demanding marine environments. The facility plays a vital role in integrating durable metal assemblies with composite hull structures, contributing to the overall performance, safety, and service life of naval craft.
The high skilled/ specialized labour facility, sufficient test equipment and workshop facilities are therewith the Naval Boat Building Yard (NBBY) to carry out the AC/ DC wiring networks, electrical & electronics installations, systems integration, and diagnostics of comprehensive electrical and electronic systems of all the boats/ crafts fabricates in the NBBY.
The comprehensive Marine Engineering Workshop serves as the technical hub for main engine propulsion system installations. The facility is equipped to perform main engine, outboard motor (OBM) and water jet installations, as well as pump and auxiliary machinery fitting for newly designed fiberglass boats built at NBBY. From initial engine installation to final shaft/jet alignment and test runs, all procedures are conducted in strict accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and technical engineering drawings. Adhering to sound engineering practices, the workshop maintains continuous readiness to support boat construction and sustain the operational fleet of the Sri Lanka Navy
